Advocating for systemic change
Members of marginalized communities are disproportionately impacted by barriers to mental health care. At Alma, we’re committed to helping remove those barriers by advocating for systemic reform. So far, we’ve supported legislation on the following subjects:
Interstate Social Work Licensure Compact
The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act
PSYPACT + Counseling Compact Legislation
Land Acknowledgement Statement
We acknowledge that the building in which our mental health outpatient clinic in Suitland, Maryland, resides on traditional and ancestral homelands of the Piscataway People. The Piscataway Nation has cared for this place for generations, long before colonization, and their history, culture, and presence continue to enrich this region.
We would like to acknowledge the displacement and erasure of the Piscataway and other Indigenous peoples that occurred as a result of colonization. As we do this work—both in virtual and in-person meetings and trainings—we would like to recognize the resiliency and ongoing contributions of Indigenous communities. We are committed to furthering awareness, respect, and meaningful action in ways that support Indigenous sovereignty and well-being. This acknowledgment of the land is one small part of fostering understanding and justice for the original stewards of this land.
